Narrate an experience you have had or heard about that illustrates the saying: “Where there is a will, there is a way”

WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY

James wanted to be a research scientist. He took that decision when he was fourteen years old and his usually reticent father told him a long story of how James’ mother had died in the process of giving birth to him. The mother had Sickle Cell Anemia and was advised to terminate the pregnancy as her health was failing. But James’ mother chose otherwise. James only had other peoples’ memory of his mother to remember her. So, he promised to immortalize her by learning how to use science to help others in her situation.

That was five years ago. Since that vow, James had reached the apex class of secondary school. Thrice, he had written the entrance examination into a tertiary institution to study pharmacology. And thrice he had failed to pass a particular subject required to study his chosen course.

Of the four subjects he needed to gain admission to the university of his choice, Mathematic proved to be his enemy. He had put in his best during the senior secondary school years but his best was not good enough. Knowledge of the subject to the point of passing eluded him; he just wasn’t good with numbers. But he told himself to keep trying because where there is a will there is often a way.

As someone who belonged to the category of the poor people in the country, James could not afford the luxury of a subject coach. His father had remarried not long after his mother’s death and had other children to pay tuition for. He promised James he would assume the responsibilities of his tertiary education when he earned an admission. But for now, James’ father had to use the meagre resources for those still in school.

As the months went by without much luck at studying by himself, James decided to get a job at a laundry shop. The first week was encouraging. James performed his duties with much gusto, bearing in mind the reward at the end of the month which would enable him pay for private lessons in Mathematics.

However, James found that his employer had started leaving much of the work for him. He could not depart by 4pm for his lessons as earlier agreed with the boss. James had no choice but to quit the job as he was missing important lessons.

After a couple of days spent feeling sad, once again, James consoled himself that where there is a will there will surely be a way. So, he decided to try again. He knew that his former Mathematics teacher Mr. Paul, would be willing to help him. The only challenge was that the teacher lived in the school which was many kilometers away from James’ house.

However, James made up his mind to attempt the journey. In order to avoid the scorching sun, he would leave his house before sunrise. He usually arrived at the school some hours later. While there, he patiently waited for the school activities to be over before the Mathematic teacher would spare some of his time to go over the difficult areas with him.

In return, he often helped Mr. Paul to launder his clothes and tend to his back garden while he waited. James worked on the lessons for six months before another examination cycle came around which he participated in. It was no surprise to Mr. Paul when the results were released and James announced to him that he had passed Mathematics in flying colours.

Mr. Paul often used James as an example to his students to encourage them saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
