Summary of The Lekki Headmaster
The Lekki Headmaster is about the principal of a school named Stardom Schools. He had been teaching at the school for more than two decades.
The story narrates his experiences as a middle-aged Nigerian man who struggled with unemployment before finding his calling as the principal of an elite school located at a highbrow area of Lagos State.
We see the difficult, humorous, vexatious, and almost slavish aspects of school life and management as seen from the point of view of an employee of a private school in today’s Nigeria.
The book explores the current japa syndrome sweeping across Nigerian society. We are told how young, middle-aged and even old people who should be thinking of a well-deserved retirement, are preferring to relocate to foreign lands to begin afresh, sometimes in jobs that is not as well paid as their previous jobs back home.
The Theme of the Japa Phenomenon in The Lekki Headmaster
We also get to know how the japa syndrome is destroying homes as in the case of a man who, in the course of running tests for his children as part of visa requirements, found out that one of the children was not biologically his.
The issue of japa is central to the story. Mr. Bepo’s wife and children have already relocated to the United Kingdom. However, they want their father to join them in London. But Mr. Bepo is not interested in japaing. He thinks it is ridiculous to go over to another society which has been developed by the members, instead of staying back to develop his fatherland.
Between the love the students and the entire school have for him and his desire to do the right thing, Mr. Bepo is conflicted.
On one hand he has to japa to fulfil his wife’s wishes, on the other hand he wants to stay back and continue nurturing young minds with the hope of building a better society in his country.
