A story that ends with “indeed, it is good to be patient” can be illustrated with the story of Farmer Joseph.
Farmer Joseph was well known in his community. This was a small feat as the population of the area was largely farmers.
He stood out as a horticulturist because he grew rare plants. His garden bloomed with beautiful ornamental flowers; his orchard brimmed with exotic fruit trees which were always in season.
Many times, he had been visited by agents of the nearby government owned pharmaceutical research institute who showed interest in testing some of his plants for possible use as medications.
Farmer Joseph’s success in farming attracted the attention of fellow community members. Most of the other farmers admired him but there were quite a few who envied his fame.
Then the pharmaceutical research institute brought the seed of a rare plant which had shown that it can be used to heal ulcer. They wanted farmer Joseph to grow it and they would buy it from him once it was big enough to be harvested. As soon as the envious farmers heard this, they declared interest in growing the plant too, which they institute agreed to.
The envious farmers cleared big portions of land and sowed the seeds. They watched farmer Joseph closely. They watered the plants when he did, they weeded when he did and they applied organic fertilizer from the goat droppings which were easy to find in the agrarian community.
The plant germinated with two bright, pointy green leaves. The envious farmers were happy. They redoubled their efforts; weeding, watering and manuring without fail. But after three months, the plants still remained short with two tiny leaves. They had not grown higher or sprouted more leaves.
The envious farmers kept checking everyday – they checked their plants and they also went to examine farmer Joseph’s as well. They were happy that farmer Joseph’s plants were exactly like their own. However, they were becoming frustrated because six months had passed and yet there was no improvement in the plant.
Dry season soon came and the envious farmers were already tired of spending money on irrigation. They concluded that the plants were not going to survive. They laughed at farmer Joseph because he kept tending to his own plants, adding mulching to prevent the plant drying out, watering and putting more manure, yet there was no improvement.
However, as soon as the first rain of the season fell, the tiny plant blossomed with many leaves, growing tendrils as it meandered on the ground. Farmer Joseph put stakes to help the plant off the ground.
Everywhere was green and fresh looking. The pharmaceutical research institute informed the farmers that they would be coming for inspection and payment of monies depending on the success recorded by each farmer.
But the other farmers had nothing to show except weeds as they had allowed their plants to die. Only farmer Joseph received a huge amount of money from the institute.
Indeed, it is good to be patient.
Points to Note in Essay Writing
1. The minimum word count for a WAEC essay or letter is 450 words. One side of an answer sheet accommodates about 150 words for an average handwriting, so you need to write up to 3 sides to achieve the minimum word count.
2. Remember the important aspects of your writing; you must start with an introduction, the middle part (body which will contain the points you are making), and a conclusion. This is very important!
3. An advantage of revising past WAEC English questions is that it allows you to choose ahead of the examination, the type of writing you will undertake among the five different types of writing given in Section A of Paper 2.
4. This way, you can continuously practice writing your chosen type and understand the rules of writing that particular form. This will enable you to answer the question on the examination day with ease.
5. You will also avoid wasting time in the examination hall, debating within yourself about which question to answer. Some students even start writing on a topic, only to cancel it and begin another one, thereby wasting precious minutes.
6. Always remember that whichever essay or letter writing question you choose, your answer must NOT BE LESS THAN 450 WORDS.
