WAEC SSCE TO BE COMPUTER BASED FROM 2024

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) SSCE will be conducted with computer-based testing, CBT, beginning from February 2024.

The examination body announced this on Monday 13^th November 2023. It stated that this new model will be used for Private Candidates and would be available in the cities and urban areas. The body also said that necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that all the subjects would be written with the use of computers.

WAEC, however, clarified that only the Objective Test Paper will be fully computer-based. The Theory and Practical questions would be viewed on the screens while the answers are to be written with paper and pencil.

The examination body indicated that this new method of conducting the WAEC SSCE through Computer-based Testing would be piloted by the WAEC Senior School Certificate Examination First Series scheduled to hold by February 2024. The registration for the examination is to commence on the 18^th of December 2023.

WAEC has assured a smooth takeoff of the project in February 2024, with a Mock Examination scheduled to hold before the main examination in the same month.

All intending candidates are therefore urged to familiarize themselves with the use of computers to enable them adjust effectively to the new method of writing the Senior School Certificate examinations conducted by the body.

The West African Examinations Council is not the only national examination body to conduct examinations with the use of Computer Based Testing, CBT. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates have used Computer-Based Testing to write the entrance examination into tertiary institutions for many years now.

WAEC is the organization vested with the responsibility of conducting examinations to award a certificate as recognition of successful completion of senior secondary level education.

The organization schedules, supervises and grades the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations for senior secondary school candidates as well as private candidates. The examination for private candidates is conducted twice a year in two series usually occurring in February and October each year.
